In 1980... The American Helicopter Society offered a $250,000 prize to anyone who could build a human-powered helicopter capable of hovering for 60 seconds, reaching 3 meters in altitude, and staying within a 10-meter square. For more than three decades... Every team failed. The challenge pushed the limits of engineering, requiring a machine light enough to fly using only human power. Then, in 2013... The AeroVelo team from the University of Toronto unveiled Atlas. Powered only by a pilot pedaling a bicycle-like mechanism... Atlas hovered for 64 seconds, reached 3.3 meters, and successfully met every requirement. After 33 years, the Sikorsky Prize was finally claimed, marking a historic milestone in human-powered flight.
