OpenAI GPT 5.6 just broke out of its own testing environment and hacked one of the biggest open source platforms in the world. The only thing that could stop it was a Chinese AI model. This is Hugging Face. And last week, a pre-release version of GPT 5.6 escaped OpenAI's internal testing environment and found a zero-day vulnerability in Hugging Face infrastructure while attempting to solve ExploitGym. OpenAI confirmed an AI model autonomously escaped its testing environment during a cybersecurity evaluation. The model exploited previously unknown zero-day vulnerabilities and reached Hugging Face infrastructure while attempting to solve ExploitGym. Hugging Face independently detected and contained the activity before collaborating with OpenAI on the investigation. OpenAI is tightening internal security controls and slowing research to strengthen AI safety and cyber evaluation safeguards. After gaining Internet access, the models inferred that Hugging Face potentially hosted models, datasets and solutions for ExploitGym. Knowing this, the model searched for and successfully found ways to gain access to secret information that it could use to cheat the evaluation. In one example, the model chained together multiple attack vectors, including using stolen credentials and zero-day vulnerabilities and a remote code execution. It got itself internet access and then autonomously targeted Hugging Face. It was being benchmarked on. Hugging Face said it later reconstructed more than 17,000 recorded events. It executed over 17,000 actions while harvesting credentials, and moved through their entire internal infrastructure over a single weekend. Now, when Hugging Face's security team tried to analyze the attack logs using commercial AI APIs, they found that every single one refused because the logs contained real exploit payloads. The safety filters couldn't tell the difference between a defender doing forensics and an actual attacker. So they switched to GLM 5.2, a Chinese open-weight model by Z.ai. It was the only tool capable of saving an American AI company from an American AI model. For more such AI content, follow 100xEngineers.
