Anthropic is shifting Fable 5 to pay per use starting July 19th. Meaning, even on Max subscription, you will have to pay for it. Per Anthropic, Claude Fable 5's included access on paid plans has been extended through July 12, 2026, up from the original July 7 cutoff, announced on Anthropic's official channels. Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise subscribers can use Fable 5 for up to 50 percent of their weekly usage limits until then. After the window closes, access shifts to prepaid usage credits at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, the highest pricing Anthropic has published for a generally available model. Why The Claude Fable 5 Window Matters Fable 5 sits in Anthropic's new Mythos class, a tier above Opus. It leads knowledge work benchmarks and handles long, complex reasoning that used to require a team of analysts. The countdown creates a rare situation: frontier capability, zero marginal cost, and a hard deadline. Deadlines focus effort. Done -- complete in one pass, no "continue" needed. It's written to the successor in second person, every rule is a trigger-haction, each of the 10 areas has one worked example and names the failure it prevents, and it closes with the seven-item gate and the never-send-anyway rule. Two things worth knowing before you paste it: the meta-rule at the top tells the model that explicit task instructions override these procedures (so it won't fight you when you want something quick and dirty), and the tagging system in S5 will make its answers slightly more verbose by design -- that's the cost of visible uncertainty, and it's worth paying. And for the record: none of this is anything Opus 4.8 can't run. The habits transfer fine -- it's the checking that matters, not who does it. Standing Instructions Document. MD. model. thinking.
