You know what? You are too old to learn chess. You're too old to be a grandmaster. You're definitely too old to become a child prodigy, and there's never gonna be a about your rise to chess fame and fortune. You're also never going to, and yet people your age pick up running every single day. So let's talk about what's actually true here. The "I'm too old" belief rests on a real phenomenon. Kids do pick up pattern recognition much faster. And most grandmasters did start young. But that's only because reaching the top 0.001% of anything takes 20 years. That's a fact about time, not a fact about your brain. I would argue that adult learners have an advantage over the kids. You study deliberately. You understand why you're learning something, and nobody has to drag you to your lessons or tell you to do your homework. So I think you're asking the wrong question. Are you too old to be a grandmaster? Are you too old to learn chess? Absolutely not. The best time to learn was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
