Is delusion the most underrated way to stop losing at chess is to become delusional and there's actual neuroscience behind why this works. Let's say you just blundered a piece and if you don't resign immediately, what you do next could be far worse. I'm talking about playing the game out fully in the knowledge that you've lost. Because if you tell your brain you've lost, it will find evidence to support your hypothesis. There's a famous psychology experiment about this where people watched a video and counted basketball passes. Halfway through, someone in a gorilla suit walked right through the middle, beat their chest and strolled off. Half the people never saw it. Not because it was hard to see, but because they were looking for something else. Same thing on the chessboard. The moment you've decided you're losing, your brain has one job: prove it. So it shows you all the ways you can lose. Meanwhile, the saving chances, a perpetual check, a hanging piece, a stalemate. They're all sitting there waiting for you to see. They were never hidden, you just weren't looking for them. So next time you're worse, be a little delusional. Ask where's the win? What's the most annoying move I can make right now and go and find the gorilla.
