In 1963... France launched a stray cat named Félicette on a suborbital space mission. The mission was a success. Félicette safely returned to Earth, becoming the first and only cat to survive a journey into space. Her flight helped scientists study how space travel affected living organisms during the early Space Race. But just two months later... Félicette was euthanized so researchers could examine the effects of the mission on her brain. Although her life ended far too soon... She remains an important part of space history, and in 2019, a bronze statue was unveiled in her honor to recognize her contribution to science.
