On February 24, 2010... Veteran SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau was interacting with Tilikum, a 12,000-pound orca, after a "Dine with Shamu" presentation. The interaction appeared routine. But moments later... Tilikum pulled Brancheau into the pool. SeaWorld staff responded immediately... But despite extensive rescue efforts, she did not survive. The incident marked the third human death associated with Tilikum, who had previously been linked to two other fatal incidents. Brancheau's death sparked worldwide debate about keeping orcas in captivity and the safety of close interactions between trainers and large marine mammals. Following the incident... SeaWorld permanently ended in-water performances with orcas, and years later announced the end of its captive orca breeding program.
