This is a video for all of my electrical engineering students out there. Here's how to build a project that will actually get you hired. I'm going into my final year at Stanford. I was president of the largest engineering club there and I've gotten internships from some pretty big companies. So I wanted to make this video to share some of the tips I've learned along the way. Let's start from square one. How do you even pick a project? Step one: break EE down into three main niches to grossly summarize. The first niche is digital, which is basically coding. And you're looking at jobs like this. The second is signals, which is basically math. And you're looking at roles like this. And the third is analog, which is mainly circuits. And you can get jobs like this. For a project, you only wanna focus on one of these areas. Otherwise, you'll be a Jack of all trades and master of none. So if you start scrolling through job postings, you'll find that the main skill sets you need to know keep appearing. And that brings us to step two. Design your project around employable skill sets. A really good example is PCB design using a tool like Altium or KiCAD. Companies want people with a skill set to build circuit boards that they can put in their products and sell. So pick a project that lets you build a circuit board and don't just do something simple. Do something challenging. For instance, you could build a circuit board that handles really high power, or you could do one that transmits data at very, very high speeds. To summarize, when picking a project, do these two steps. First, identify which niche in EE you land in and build your project around that. Second, scroll through job postings and see what skill sets you need to know. Design your projects to focus on you learning these skills.
