The Quran does not allow men to beat their wives. I can't even believe we're sitting here having to have this conversation. But before we even do, let's go ahead and address that the Quran is consistent. The Quran itself explains itself and it does not contradict Alhamdulillah. In Surah Al-Nisa verse 34, Allah addresses a wife's disloyalty to warn her, to leave her bed and then idribuhuna. Most translations render this word to mean strike or beat them in this verse, but based on the entire context of the Quran, this simply can't be possible. That Subhanahu made the oppression of women, which would contradict everything Allah said against oppression, like in Surah Al-Bakara 2:231, Allah says, "...wa la tumsikuhunna dirāran litata'adū..." "And do not keep them to cause harm so that you transgress." and in Surah 4:19, "...wa 'ashiruhunna bil-ma'rūf..." "And live with them in kindness." and in Surah 30:21, Allah says, "mawadatan wa rahmah." Love and mercy between spouses. How could the same book that forbids harming a wife, commands kindness and mercy, turn verses and to strike her? Does the Quran contradict itself? And the key, daraba, the root idribahuna, is used 55 times in the Quran and is one of the multi-meaning words in the Arabic language. It doesn't only mean to strike. In the same Surah 4:101, Allah uses the exact same word to describe something different. He says, "wa idha darabtum fi al-ardi..." "And when you travel through the land..." Here, daraba means to go forth, depart, leave, not strike. Of Surah 34 is read in light of the rest of the Quran, the meaning becomes clear. The final measure, warning, leaving to separate, not to raise a hand against her. This fits perfectly with the very next verse, 4:35, when Allah speaks about reconciliation, not violence. The Quran protects women. It does not permit and Quran itself, always consistent. Alaykum.
