3 Ways To Know When Your YouTube Short Will Go Viral
Swipe to learn now
1. Retention %
Retention tells you how much of your Short videos are actually watching after not scrolling. For shorter vids, 100%+ is the goal because rewatches and make loops can push avg viewer duration beyond the video's length.
Look at the shape of the graph, not only the final percentage. Sharp drops expose boring or confusing moments. Spikes can show rewatches. A smooth curve upward should continue to go up and not flatline.
Shoot for:
Under 70% = Weak
70-90% = Decent
90-100% = Strong
100%+ = Excellent
120%+ = Replay king
2. Stay To Watch
This measures how often people chose to keep watching versus immediately swiping away. YouTube defines "Stay to Watch" time as the percentage that watched past a certain amount of time.
Retention and Stayed to Watch need to be analyzed together. A Short can have great retention among the people who stayed but still lose distribution if too many people swiped at the opening. High Stayed to Watch + high retention is the combination you're hunting for.
Under 60% = Needs work
60-70% = Decent
70-75% = Strong
75-80% = Excellent
80%+ = Elite territory
3. Real Time Views
Real-time views show the velocity and direction of the Short right now. Don't just stare at the 48-hour totals. Try to keep up with the hourly bars shown.
If hourly views start accelerating after the Short has already been live for days, that's a very strong sign distribution is expanding again. If any of the bars steadily decline, momentum is cooling. Compare the Short against its your previous hourly baseline, because there's no universal views target.
What you want: bars increasing, new peaks forming, or a second wave after an earlier slowdown or flatline graph.
