Original caption

Gavrilo Princip was a Bosnian Serb student and nationalist who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. The assassination triggered the July Crisis, leading to the outbreak of World War I. Because Princip was 19 years old, he was too young to receive the death penalty under Austro-Hungarian law and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, where he died of tuberculosis in 1918.
