Long before digital sensors, engineers relied on precision and simple tools to collect critical data. Workers manually recorded each hammer strike on graph paper as foundation piles were driven into the ground. Known as pile calendaring, the method estimates a pile's load-bearing capacity by measuring movement after each impact. Even today, it remains a trusted way to verify modern sensor data.
