Don’t say “yes” too quickly. If you’re interviewing for high-paying careers like tech sales, finance or consulting, the first offer is rarely the full picture. Base salary, commission, equity, benefits, flexibility, progression, training, remote working… all of it matters. And once you immediately accept an offer, you lose a lot of your leverage to negotiate. Instead, say something like: “Thank you so much, I’m really excited about the opportunity. I’d love to take a little time to review the offer properly. Could you send everything over and let me know when you’d like my decision by?” It’s calm. Professional. Confident. This isn’t about playing games or trying to squeeze every employer for more money. It’s about making an informed decision and, where appropriate, giving yourself the opportunity to negotiate the overall package. Important: This advice isn’t for every job or every situation. It’s most applicable to competitive, higher-paying roles where negotiation is common and expected—such as tech sales, finance, consulting and other corporate careers. The best candidates don’t just prepare for interviews. They prepare for what happens after they get the offer too.
