I'm in 3rd year at Tuks, 3rd year of university at Tuks. And here are 3 financial decisions that I wish I made from day 1 at university, but I didn't. So, if you are in university, or about to go to university, please watch this. Because it can make you a millionaire. Number one, open a tax-free savings account. A Tax Free Savings Account allows you to invest up to R500 000 without paying any tax on your investment interest. Put R6,000+/year (which is like R500/mo, like working as a waiter for one shift per week). Don't forget to invest it. Because if you do this at 18, and then you add R500 every month, until you retire... Total contributed = Only R282,000. You will have ~R14.4M (tax-free). And every year that you put off doing this (even though your older sibling is telling you to do it but you think you're too poor or it's too complicated). You lose ~time~ in the market which is actually SO much money. DON'T WAIT. Start doing it NOW !! Number two, get a credit card. Do some research, google "best student credit cards in SA". ABSA is a good option, you only need to show that you receive R800/mo. This could be from: Bursary, Allowance, Income. This will allow you to: cash back, Improve credit score, perks (e.g. airport lounge access). 1. Put basic expenses on Credit Card. 2. Put it on auto pay (Pay off in full every month).
