The worst thing you can do as a girl with fine hair is copy the exact routines of girls with coarse hair. My whole life, my hair was always flat, dull, lifeless and wouldn't grow past here. But now that I've accepted my fine hair, and I actually started taking care of it the way that it's supposed to be taken care of, my hair is so much healthier than before. It's long, it's shiny, it has volume and fullness, and it grows like a weed. Assuming you also want to achieve this hair, these are the biggest haircare mistakes I made as a girl with fine hair, so that you don't make them. Mistake number one, being scared of washing my hair often. When your hair is clearly dirty and greasy, your scalp is gross and irritated, and using dry shampoo instead. I swear we were all fear mongered at some point that washing your hair was somehow bad for you. For fine hair, your hair strand is literally too tiny to handle all that buildup on your scalp. It's going to prevent your hair from growing, it's going to make your hair fall out, and it's not going to look full or dense or nice because there's all that buildup weighing your hair down. I wash it every two days instead of every four or five days. If you want long hair, you need a healthy scalp. And if you want a healthy scalp, you need to clean it. Mistake number two, using moisturizing creamy shampoos. When your hair is flat and heavy when you get out of the shower, moisturizing shampoos will deposit emollients in your hair that will weigh your hair down, especially if you have an oily scalp too. You do not need a moisturizing shampoo. Instead, pick a shampoo that is clear, which means it doesn't have any emollients in it. Clear shampoos are almost always volumizing, way better cleaning, and a lot better for fine hair if you want that full, super clean and fresh look. Mistake number three, skipping scalp exfoliation and clarifying shampoo. Again, if your hair is going to grow, your scalp needs to be clean and exfoliated. You can't have any buildup around your hair follicles that's causing your hair to literally fall out. Using a clarifying shampoo at least once a week to remove all that buildup on your scalp and all the products you put in it is so important for your hair health. And with fine hair, clean hair just always looks better. Mistake number four, copying 10 step hair routines. Thinking that the longer your hair routine is, the better. I used to follow trendy hair routines and they would have hair oiling, shampoo, conditioner, leave-in treatment, leave-in cream, oil again, leave-in spray, detangler, leave-in cream, oil again. Listen, if your hair is like mine, which means that this is half of someone's ponytail, getting a full layered haircut took away so much density from the length of my hair and made it look like I just had little rat tails, stringy. That's just not the look I'm going for. I feel that this is a lot more flattering. Your perfect haircut to keep that long look while still having a little bit of dimension and texture. Ask for this haircut at the salon: get some face framing and curtain bangs and then slowly taper and layer it from there. That way you still have some shorter layers that you can play with and blow out to give you some of that dimension, but you keep a majority of that density. If you ask a good hairstylist, they'll tell you not to get a lot of layers if you have fine hair. They'll tell you to keep them blunt at the ends, get some face framing and curtain bangs and then slowly taper and layer it from there. That way you still have some shorter layers that you can play with and blow out to give you some of that dimension, but you keep a majority of that density.
