One of my favourite big sister finance lessons? Avoid locking yourself into large recurring expenses. Don’t try to max out your spending on rent, mortgage, and car payments to ‘get the best you can afford’. This will severely limit your financial options in the future. . Unless you’re already on very secure footing financially, taking on enormous overhead expenses will impact your ability to do things like keep an emergency fund, invest enough, or have enough discretionary income leftover to have fun. . Limiting your spending on large recurring payments will leave you with more discretionary income. It may sound obvious, but it’s so easy to want to upgrade when you’re in the heat of the moment making these large purchasing decisions. .
