Vacuum may sound like “empty space,” but according to modern quantum physics, it is anything but empty. Even when all matter is removed, the vacuum is still filled with quantum fields. These fields are never completely still. Tiny fluctuations are constantly occurring, and quantum theory describes short lived virtual particles that briefly appear and disappear as part of these fluctuations. They cannot be observed directly as ordinary particles, but their effects can be measured in experiments. This makes the vacuum one of the most mysterious concepts in all of physics. It challenges our everyday intuition about what “nothing” really means. What appears to be empty space is actually a dynamic quantum environment. Understanding the quantum vacuum could help answer some of the biggest questions in science.
