The Mamdani Markets are just another Mamdani Mirage… 🗽🛒🧐 Seventy million taxpayer dollars. Upfront. Just to open five stores. And what do you get for that? A thirty percent discount on a small list of goods. Aldi already beats that. Walmart already beats that. So the city is spending seventy million dollars to lose to competitors that already exist, for free. And that's before a single day of operating costs. Staff, inventory, maintenance... none of that thirty percent discount pays for itself. And for what? A narrow selection of basic goods. No pharmacy. No deli counter. No bakery. None of the services a real grocery store competes on. So what you have in reality is higher costs, with smaller discount and fewer options with no services. And what makes it worse is New York already has a program that does this right. It's called FRESH, zoning bonuses and tax breaks for private grocers who build in underserved neighborhoods. Since 2009, thirty stores open. One hundred seventy-seven million dollars, not from taxpayers, from private investment. Fourteen hundred jobs. Zero public dollars on construction. So why not just use that? Because FRESH doesn't get him what he actually wants. His own words: a store "focused on keeping prices low, not making a profit." That only works if government owns it. And that's why he keeps saying "food desert." It sounds like there's no other option, except there's reportedly forty-five grocery stores within a thirty-five-minute walk of the site he picked. The desert isn't real. It's the justification he needs to make ownership the story. The math was never the point and it’s not really about savings. It’s about control. It’s about socialism.
