An explosion killed three people at the Balzi Rossi restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square in Moscow on Saturday evening, at the foot of one of Stalin's seven skyscrapers. State television suggested a gas cylinder; a Telegram channel placed the blast in the restaurant's kitchen. The restaurant said its kitchen was untouched and the damage was outside, at the entrance. The official finding later confirmed that geometry. At the door, a security guard stopped a woman carrying a box wrapped as a gift. Investigators say it held a homemade bomb packed with ball bearings, detonated — they believe — remotely. The guard died stopping her. She died too, and one guest. Who she was has not been established. Twenty-one people were injured, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Committee. At 23:14, the committee named the cause: an improvised explosive device. A terrorism case under Article 205 was opened before midnight. The gas story had survived about three hours. It was not the first such first explanation. Eleven months earlier, a blast at the Central Children's Store next to FSB headquarters was blamed on a gas cylinder within hours. There, gas remains the official finding. Twice in a year, the first explanation was gas. This time, the restaurant contradicted it in public while the story was still running. The venue was closed for a private event.
