⚠️ Warning: This post will probably make some people uncomfortable. For generations, many African Traditional Religions were labeled “witchcraft,” “pagan,” or “demonic” by those who had never truly studied them. This isn’t about telling anyone to abandon Christianity. This is about asking one simple question: Why were our ancestors’ spiritual traditions erased, demonized, and replaced? If you’re going to call Ifá, Ìṣẹ̀ṣe, or the Òrìṣà “evil”… 📚 Read about them first. History is bigger than one religion. Christianity is one spiritual tradition not the only one. Africa had civilizations, philosophy, ethics, medicine, astronomy, kings, priests, and spiritual systems long before missionaries arrived in many regions. You don’t have to agree with me. But if you’re going to debate me… Bring books. Bring history. Bring sources. Long before Christianity reached Yorubaland, the Yoruba had: • Ifá • Ìṣẹ̀ṣẹ̀ • Hundreds of Odù Ifá • Kings & Kingdoms • Advanced Cities • Philosophy & Ethics • Medicine, Math, Astronomy • Art, Trade & Agriculture Ilé-Ifè flourished c. 1000-1400 CE Òyó Empire rose c. 1300s CE 4 CHRISTIANITY ALREADY EXISTED... Christianity began in the 1st century CE in the Eastern Mediterranean. For centuries, Yoruba people practiced their own religion. Christianity did not become widespread in Yorubaland until the 1800s. HISTORY MATTERS. CONTEXT MATTERS. TRUTH MATTERS. 5 THE SLAVE TRADE CHANGED EVERYTHING 1444 Portuguese ships began transporting enslaved Africans across the Atlantic. 1500s-1800s Millions of Africans were kidnapped. Many were Yoruba. Families were separated. Cultures, languages & religions were attacked. THIS WASN'T JUST A TRADE. IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF GENERATIONS OF PAIN. REMEMBER. HONOR. RECLAIM. 6 COLONIALISM DIDN'T JUST TAKE LAND. IT TRIED TO REPLACE IDENTITY. Missionaries and colonial writers described African religions as: • Pagan • Heathen • Idol Worship • Devil Worship • Witchcraft These labels were used to justify conversion, oppression, and the dismissal of African traditions. THEY WERE NEVER THE TRUTH. 7 PRACTICE IFÁ... OR HIDE IT. Across different colonies, traditional practices were often banned or punished. • Sacred objects destroyed • Mission schools promoted Christianity • Many were baptized • Ifá was practiced in secret to survive NOT BECAUSE THEY STOPPED BELIEVING. BECAUSE SURVIVAL REQUIRED ADAPTATION. 8 SYNCRETISM SAVED TRADITIONS Our ancestors adapted. This is called SYNCRETISM. The Orisha were never forgotten. They were hidden in plain sight. Shàngó -> Saint Barbara Yemọjá -> Our Lady of Regla Ọbàtálá -> Our Lady of Mercy DIFFERENT PLACES, DIFFERENT ASSOCIATIONS. SAME SPIRIT. SAME SURVIVAL. 9 SO WHY DO PEOPLE STILL SAY... "THAT'S WITCHCRAFT?" Because for generations, African religions were portrayed by missionaries as evil and demonic. Those lies were written in books, taught in schools, and passed down on purpose. TRUTH WAS SILENCED. BUT WE REMEMBER. AND WE RECLAIM. 10 THEIR INTENTIONS WASN'T GOD. IT WAS CONTROL. Missionaries weren't here to save souls. They were here to TAKE OVER. POWER Convert & control. Keep colonized people obedient. ERASE Destroy native languages, stories, names & traditions. DIVIDE Break communities and replace unity with shame. EXPLOIT Steal land, resources & profit from our pain. OPEN YOUR EYES. KNOW YOUR HISTORY. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM. 11 WHAT IFÁ ACTUALLY TEACHES Ìwà Pẹ̀lẹ́ (Good Character) Ori (Destiny & Purpose) Respect for Elders Community & Responsibility Balance & Harmony Wisdom & Self Awareness DOES THAT SOUND LIKE EVIL? IFÁ TEACHES LIFE. NOT FEAR. NOT HATE. BUT TRUTH, PURPOSE & BALANCE. 12 JESUS VS. SOME MODERN BEHAVIOR Jesus taught: • Love your neighbor • Love your enemies • Show mercy • Judge not • Do not be hypocrites Yet many ATR practitioners are told: • "You're going to hell." • "That's demonic." • "You need Jesus." NOT ALL CHRISTIANS DO THIS. BUT MANY OF US HAVE EXPERIENCED IT. 13 READ AFRICAN VOICES Don't just read colonial books about us. Read us. Baba Ifá Karade Wande Abimbola Jacob K. OUR HISTORY. 14 THE BIBLE WASN'T ALWAYS IN YORUBA The first complete Yoruba Bible wasn't available until the late 1800s thanks to the work of Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African Anglican Bishop. Before that, Yoruba people already had Ifá, oral history, proverbs, and sacred texts. OUR KNOWLEDGE EXISTED LONG BEFORE IT WAS WRITTEN IN YORUBA. 15 IF YOUR ANCESTORS HAD NEVER BEEN ENSLAVED... If missionaries had never arrived... If colonial governments had never banned traditions... If your language had never been suppressed... WHAT WOULD YOUR FAMILY'S SPIRITUAL PATH LOOK LIKE TODAY? 16 THEY TRIED TO ERASE IT. IT SURVIVED. They tried to break us. We survived. They called it witchcraft. We survived. They banned ceremonies. We survived. They separated families. We survived. WE ARE STILL HERE. WE ARE STILL REMEMBERING. WE ARE STILL PRACTICING. 17 CHRISTIANITY ISN'T THE ONLY RELIGION. Our ancestors practiced many different beliefs and Spiritual paths across Africa. Each tradition holds wisdom, purpose, and value. DO YOUR RESEARCH. KNOW YOUR HISTORY. HONOR ALL TRUTHS.
