On August 4, 2020, nearly 3,000 tonnes of stored ammonium nitrate detonated at Beirut's port. The highly explosive material was improperly stored. The blast was one of the largest non-nuclear explosions on record, killing more than 200 people. The explosion was so severe that over 300,000 people were forced out of their homes. Lebanese authorities knew the ammonium nitrate had been stored at the port since 2014. But no action was taken to safely dispose of the dangerous material. Families of victims were promised justice, but they still haven't got it due to years of political delays and obstructions.
