“Drones are so 2010s” is probably what you though before watching this video. Last week I got to see how autonomous drone technology is being used to help save the UK’s Network Rail millions of pounds! You see, the UK's biggest train station, London Waterloo, has a really big problem. Every time there's a fault with the tracks or someone trespasses onto the line, the entire station needs to be shut down. This costs Network Rail millions of pounds in fines every time it happens These autonomous drones (supervised by a real person) are used to automatically detect faults and detect trespassers without the need for humans to be sent out onto the tracks to find out what's wrong. A company callee SkyBound (based in Southampton) is behind this tech, and the plan is to continue to deploy it around the UK!
