This old man begged me through tears not to clean his Mustang for almost an hour. He kept repeating the exact same sentence. If you wash all this mud away, I might lose the last memory I had. No idea what he meant. When I finally saw the car, I honestly thought I had the wrong address. It barely looked like a car anymore. It was completely covered in dried mud. I asked him why he had never cleaned it. He didn't answer. Instead, he pulled an old photograph out of his wallet. In that picture, the exact same car looked brand new, standing next to it was a little girl, maybe 11 years old, with the biggest smile on her face. He looked at me and quietly said, that was my daughter. Then he couldn't speak anymore. So I started cleaning. The first shovel passes peeled away huge sheets of mud. The more I cleaned, the more nervous he became. Several times he asked me to stop. Then he finally told me why. More than 20 years ago, his daughter loved this car. Every weekend, they drove down old country roads together until one day, a storm left them stuck in a muddy field. They spent hours laughing while waiting for a farmer to pull them out with his tractor. On the way home, she smiled and said, promise me, we'll never wash it. So always remember today. Just a few weeks later, she passed away before they could ever take another drive together. From that day on, he never touched the car because that mud was the last reminder of one of the happiest days of his life. I stopped for a moment, not knowing whether to keep cleaning or protect a promise that had lasted for decades. Then he wiped away his tears and whispered, I think she'd rather see it disappearing beneath the dirt. So I finished the job today. The restoration is almost complete. In a few days, I'll return the car to him. I just keep wondering when he sees it the way his daughter will remember it. Will he smile or cry? What would you have done?
