And when he opened the door, I understood why he had waited so long. The garage was his old Ford, covered in an incredible amount of dust. It hadn't moved in years. He explained that this car had been for almost every major moment of his life. Their first family vacations, the day he first met his wife. Then the years passed. His children grew up, his wife passed away, and he never found the strength to drive this car again. So it stayed there in silence for years. From that moment on, I decided to do much more than just clean it. I pulled the car out of the garage and started removing everything the years had left behind. Dust was coming out from everywhere. Under the floor mats, I found things he probably hadn't seen in decades. I removed the seats to clean the floor. I found something that completely broke me. A tiny old child's shoe was stuck underneath the back seat. I put it safely to the side because I knew exactly who it had belonged to. I kept working for hours today. The restoration is almost complete. And tomorrow I'm going back to his house with the car. I'm going to park this old car in front of his home.
