Florence died of yellow fever when she was 10 years old in 1871
In life she was frightened of storms.
Whenever one occurred she would rush to her mom Ellen to find comfort.
Her mom added a staircase to her grave so that she could go comfort Florence during storms.
To shelter her mother during storms, hinged metal trap doors were installed over the area the mother would occupy while at her child's grave.
Florence's obituary says:
"The loss of an only child to the hearts of the parents is truly irreparable. This beautiful child, bright and intelligent beyond her years."
People leave toys for Florence, and can still sit with her during storms
