On January 15, 2009... US Airways Flight 1549 took off from New York City's LaGuardia Airport. Just minutes later... The aircraft struck a flock of Canada geese, causing both engines to fail at an altitude of about 850 meters (2,800 feet). Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles had only 208 seconds to make a life-or-death decision. With no safe runway within reach... Sully chose an option almost no pilot had ever attempted. He guided the powerless Airbus A320 onto the Hudson River. The landing was so precise... That the aircraft remained intact long enough for passengers and crew to evacuate onto the wings and life rafts. Ferries and emergency responders arrived within minutes. Against all odds... Every one of the 155 people on board survived. The event became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson" and is widely regarded as one of the greatest examples of skill, teamwork, and calm decision-making in aviation history.
