A Chinese research team is experimenting with a radical new EV safety concept: ejecting the battery pack during a serious crash or thermal runaway. Developed by the China Vehicle Collision Repair Technical and Research Centre, the system uses sensors to detect critical battery failures or severe impacts. If triggered, gas generators similar to those used in airbags could rapidly separate the battery pack from the vehicle. In the reported concept, the battery could be pushed several metres away from the vehicle in under a second, physically separating the energy source from the passenger cabin. The goal is to reduce the risk of passengers being exposed to extreme heat and smoke from a battery fire. But there’s a major catch: launching a battery weighing hundreds of kilograms onto a public road could create serious risks for pedestrians, other vehicles, and surrounding property. For now, this remains an experimental concept, not a production-ready EV safety system. #ev #electricvehicles #batterytechnology #robotics #futuretech
