External Genital Examination
place sterile absorbent pad underneath the patient's genital area
clean the penis with the cotton swabs using saline or sterile water
hold the penis with your non dominant hand using some sterile gauze
and hold the forceps for cleaning with your other hand
clean in the direction away from the urethral meatus
after cleaning place a sterile drape over the genitalia
unwrap your catheter
ensuring that it remains within your sterile field
apply lubricant to the tip of the Foley's catheter
coat the distal portion of the catheter tip
with a generous amount of lubricant
covering the balloon portion as well
bring the catheter with the sterile receiver near to the patient
hold the penis with one hand
and insert the exposed catheter tip into the urethral meatus
using your other hand advance the catheter slowly but firmly
as you pass the prostate you may notice some resistance
and the patient may feel more discomfort
if you encounter a lot of resistance
or if the patient complains of significant pain stop and ask for help
as you enter the bladder
you will see urine begin to drain from the catheter
you should continue to advance the catheter until it is fully inserted
