How to Teach Neurodivergent Kids the Different Levels of Friendship Your child may call someone their “best friend” after two conversations, but friendship has layers. For many neurodivergent kids, the difference between an acquaintance, a casual friend, and a close friend is not always obvious. Those distinctions can affect trust, boundaries, expectations, and even how kids respond when friendships change. Instead of asking, “Are they really your friend?” try looking at the pattern. Do they seek your child out? Make plans? Respect boundaries? Keep private information private? Show care consistently? Knowing someone, liking someone, and trusting someone are not the same thing.
