I didn’t know what to expect regarding the food in Kosovo. Balkan cuisine has a tendency to be heavy on the meats, and I’ve never really been introduced to Albanian food. I have to say, I was impressed as a whole. Qofte with cream – A unique dish to Kosovo, basically their take on meatballs and typically made with seasoned minced meat. Fli – Especially common in the mountain regions, basically a bunch of thin layers of crepes Lakror – MY FAVORITE. A savory baked pastry that’s like a thicker, heartier version of burek. It can be filled with different combinations of vegetables, cheese, or meat. Leqenik – Cornbread-like, usually made with corn flour and can be prepared with greens or other fillings. Tavë Kosi – Lamb, rice, cream, and vegetables served in a claypot. So flavorful. Qebapa – Kosovo’s take on ćevapi. Small grilled pieces of minced meat that are usually served with bread and onions, best with ajvar. Suxhuk – A heavily seasoned sausage that’s usually made with beef in Kosovo. Kinda like a jerky — really good! Burek – You probably don’t need me to explain burek if you’ve spent time in the Balkans, but Kosovo does it well. I had it with meat, cheese, and spinach. Shope/Šopska Salad – My saving grace when I needed some vegetables and greens lol. Actually a Bulgarian salad, but very prevalent in Kosovo. No lettuce, but instead with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, and white cheese. Ajvar – The roasted red pepper spread is a Balkan staple and you’ll find it alongside plenty of meals in Kosovo. Tulumba – SOOOO GOOD. Albania’s take on churros – fried dough that’s soaked in a sweet syrup, making it crispy on the outside and incredibly soft and sugary inside. . . #kosova #albanianfood #shqip #foodtravel #traveltok
