🇽🇰 Gjeravica Peak was the official highest point in Kosovo until recently when it was discovered it’s actually the 2nd-highest pount of the country 😅 Still, it’s the highest peak *fully within* Kosovo, and it’s an AWESOME hike. It’s an optional branch-off trail from the popular Peaks of the Balkans loop, reachable from Doberdoll, Albania (via Valbona) by foot (7 hours), or from Valbona by car (2 hours). It took about five hours up-and-down and had ~3,000-feet of elevation gain. I’d recommend hiking Gjeravica with a guide, as the road up to the trailhead requires a 4x4 vehicle and takes about 50 minutes from the nearest town of Junik. It also didn’t seem incredibly well-marked, though that could’ve been because of the fog. For accommodation, I’d recommend one of the guesthouses in the small village of Gropa e Erenikut at the trailhead, or in the cool city of Gjakova 1-1.5 hours away. I've never hiked to the highest point of any country before and when I was planning my trip to Kosovo and I found out that the highest mountain in the country is actually pretty doable for intermediate hikers like myself, I knew I had to go. So this is Gjeravica Peak. Like I said, it's not the highest point in Kosovo, sadly, recently another mountain was found to be like a few feet taller, but I'm gonna claim it because it's the highest mountain fully within Kosovo. The hike started kind of foggy, but it did give like Scottish Highlands, Lord of the Rings vibes, so it was so really cool. The hike from where we started was about five hours round trip and there's nothing too steep or dangerous like the part you're seeing is the hardest part and it wasn't that difficult. So anybody in good shape can do this hike for sure. We took a short break at this beautiful glacial lake that sits right beneath the peak. We actually met some other hikers from Lapi here, they were the only people we saw on the whole trail. That's what I love about hiking in Kosovo is the trails are so empty. And then we kept going toward the top, some sheep joined us, it's crazy to me that sheep does roam this high up. And then we're at the peak and we were greeted by the Kosovo Liberation Army flag. You can sign your name in the little book beneath the flag. The views up here were insane. You can actually see three countries from the top. After hanging out at the summit for a bit, we started making our way back down. The hike down was equally as gorgeous. This glacial lake was also awesome. We could have hung out here all day. If you're doing this hike out in Pec, then hang out on the shores of the lake because when the sun is out, I'm sure it's just unbeatable. So a lot more sheep on the way down. Again, gives very much Iceland, Scotland vibes, just really cool vibes up in the mountains in Kosovo. And before we knew it, we were back at our car and back in Jacova where we were staying for the night. We got this amazing dinner at Yaki Grill in Jacova, definitely go here. All in all, an amazing day hiking and if you're in Kosovo, definitely do the Gjeravica Peak hike.
