4 days of boarding and working through Draco’s defensive aggression, and now it’s time for his owners to pick him up. For the first time in 6 months, Draco sees his “dad.” What I want you to pay attention to in this video is how much his owner’s presence influences Draco’s behavior. His aggression toward the grabber when coming out of the crate was mild, and honestly, this was the best I’ve seen him do with that particular trigger. But once his owners arrive, you can clearly see a shift. He becomes more anxious, more impulsive, and more overstimulated, especially when his owner takes the leash. This is why behavior doesn’t exist in a vacuum. The environment, the people around the dog, the relationship, and the emotions attached to a situation can all change how a dog responds. Instead of simply handing Draco back to his owners, we take the time to work through those impulses and discuss how they can manage him moving forward.
