I'm a 30-year-old dad and I never went to college. So today is week one of learning something new every single week until I become a data engineer. Three years ago when I thought I was good at SQL, I really had no idea what I was doing. I had just become a data analyst and I thought I understood absolutely everything. HA HA. No, I did not. At the time, there was an engineer on another team that knew I was interested in doing this. So he showed me a snippet of his advanced SQL and it broke my heart. I wasn't even remotely close to this yet. So I dove into learning advanced techniques with these resources here. Then eventually started learning how different databases actually worked. DB2, MySQL, Postgre SQL, SQL server, Snowflake. There was a lot to learn and while I was doing all that, I was still trying to learn Python. But we'll talk about that in week two. Because with this, a whole new world of projects. I started building procedures in SQL server that could handle data cleansing, data intake, and reporting automatically. Then after a year of this, my SQL was starting to look like this instead of looking like this. And eventually I combined all this SQL with power automate using robotic process automation to automate things like data entry. I realized I wasn't just learning SQL anymore. I was starting to build real things. I had no idea that I was scratching the surface. Because I was about to experience a whole new world with Python, but we will talk about that in week two. I have no idea how many weeks this is going to take, but make sure you follow along. Let's see if I can become a data engineer.
