Kill your lawn! I spent this summer researching how to remove my front lawn to plant a native garden - and hopefully get it paid for! Here's how I'm doing it -> Step 1: Cut the grass as short as possible Step 2: Cover in with cardboard Overlap the pieces at least 6 inches You want kinda-thicc pieces with no plastic, or tape, and minimal ink. The best pieces are from Sam's/Costco because they are big solid pieces - just ask someone if they have them in the back I don't have a membership to either, just walk in - get a slice of pizza too Step 3: Wet the cardboard to weigh them down, kick start decomposition, and help rain penetrate Step 4: Get some mulch or wood chips - I used STL Compost but there are free options Step 5: Spread it evenly - you want about 5 in thick over the whole thing I started to feel like I was in the movie Holes. Mulch is heavy and it was like 100 degrees, so I called in backup Step 6: Wait like 6-8 weeks before planting. If grass pop through, layer more cardboard on. Most turf grasses are aggressive and put up a good fight - but I haven't had too much of a problem. I'll update ya'll about the landscape design, grant, and planting process later!
