Language is one of the strangest things humans ever created - and perhaps one of the most powerful. A few vibrations in the air can become a thought inside another person’s mind. We turn sounds into words, words into ideas, and ideas into stories, knowledge, jokes, promises, questions and entire imaginary worlds. Thousands of languages have emerged throughout human history, each developing its own sounds, structures and ways of expressing reality. Some ideas can be translated almost perfectly, while others are deeply connected to the language and culture they came from. And language never really stops changing - pronunciations shift, meanings evolve, new words appear and old ones disappear. But language is much older than writing. For most of our history, words existed only for a moment - spoken, understood and gone. Writing changed that. A thought could suddenly survive its speaker, travel across continents and reach people thousands of years into the future.
