THE RUBICON: REVOLVING DOORS OF FATE™ ⚡️ What does “crossing the Rubicon” actually mean? The Rubicon River ≠ impressive, raging body of whitewater. That was almost the point. In 49 BCE, it was a small river marking the boundary between Caesar's province of Cisalpine, Gaul (modern France) & Italy proper. Caesar could command his army on his side of that boundary. Crossing into Italy with his legendary Legion = taking military force across a forbidden political frontier; the lighting of a single match that packed enough power to transform a movement into insurrection, & soon ignited the Roman Civil War. Today, the actions of Caesar & his legion = an enduringly popular English idiom; basically, “crossing the Rubicon” = passing a point of no return. After years of studying the Classics + ancient history writ large, I find myself now more compelled to map the cognitive moment that churned within Caesar immediately BEFORE his Crossing: when two possible versions of history remained simultaneously available, but only briefly, and his choice alone determined what would happen next. ⚡️I call these moments of both our lives as individuals + our collective human story: Revolving Doors of Fate™ Frost gives us his Roads (do they all lead to Rome after all 😉); Nietzsche➡️the Abyss. Caesar's Crossing still echoes in the mind's eye of our collective narrative, over 2,000 years since his "transgression" managed to spark both a Roman Civil War & referendum on Western governance itself.
