There is a natural direction to almost everything happening around us. A warm cup slowly cools, ice turns into water, and energy gradually spreads through a system. These simple processes are connected by the same fundamental principles of physics. What makes this especially fascinating is that we have learned to locally influence that direction. A refrigerator, for example, uses energy to move heat from a colder space into a warmer environment, allowing us to maintain specific conditions for long periods of time. Nature does something similar in incredibly complex ways. Living cells constantly use energy to maintain their structure, build molecules and organize countless processes at once. From a glass of water to living organisms and entire stars, the same physical principles appear at completely different scales.
