From about 250 miles above Earth, astronauts on the International Space Station get a perspective on solar eclipses that no one on the ground ever sees. Instead of the sky going dark above them, they watch the Moon's shadow, called the umbra, race across the planet's surface below. At the equator, that shadow travels at roughly 1,100 miles per hour, and near the poles it can exceed 5,000 miles per hour. The ISS orbits Earth every 90 minutes, which means its crew can cross the eclipse path multiple times during a single event.🌒🌕☀️ During the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, the seven-member Expedition 71 crew watched the Moon's shadow sweep across North America, darkening clouds, coastlines, and land masses in one sweeping pass after another. From orbit, the shadow appears as a stark black circle moving across a sunlit planet, more like a spotlight being switched off than the gradual dimming people experience on the ground. The ISS crew also sees up to five eclipses per year simply because of how often they orbit into alignment with the Moon and Sun.
