For years, people living along Russia's Techa River relied on its water without knowing what was being released into it. Between 1949 and 1956, the secret Soviet Mayak nuclear complex discharged large amounts of radioactive waste into the river. Thousands of residents were exposed to contamination through the water and surrounding environment. One of the people later associated with the affected community was Vakil Batirshin, from New Muslyumovo. The most disturbing part wasn't just the contamination… It was that many people had no idea what was happening. The Techa River became a lasting example of how secrecy surrounding nuclear programs could have consequences far beyond the facility itself. #tiktokgrowthchallenge #TechaRiver #NuclearHistory #HistoryFacts
