ABC News Live just covered what I have been trying to teach you about: the GRAS loophole in America’s food system. 🚨 For decades, food companies have been allowed to decide for themselves that an ingredient is “Generally Recognized as Safe” and put it into our food without even notifying the FDA. Now, the FDA is proposing that companies finally be required to disclose those ingredients and provide their safety evidence. This doesn’t mean that it’s happening but it means that the conversation is starting. This is exactly why I made this video comparing the American GRAS system to Europe’s precautionary principle. In Europe, the question is often, “Has this been shown to be safe?” In America, it can feel like the question is, “Has it been proven harmful yet?” This conversation is finally reaching mainstream news, and it is one every American deserves to understand.
