If I had to decide from scratch in 2026, here's how I'd become an AI engineer in 2026. I spent the past year learning everything in this field while building my own startup to $9 million ARR. Based off of that, I'd break it down into 5 steps. First if you learn Python with any of these resources, it's the main programming language in AI. In particular, I would focus on some of these software fundamentals and engineering by building out projects from this 30 days of Python repository. Next, I would master the core concepts including the math with 3Blue1Brown, StatQuest for core statistics, and Andrew's lectures on ML concepts. Then, start building your first proper AI project playlist on YouTube. It's a full tutorial by the co-founder of OpenAI, there's no better way. Now, further your understanding by understanding everything around AI systems, inference, evals, caching, pipelines, and more with these two books and production tools like LangChain. Finally, you're going to get your hands dirty and build out actual AI projects like a RAG app over documents, a multi-step AI forecasting model trained on real world data. Save this roadmap for more.
