Mold so old that it actually starts drying up and delaminating from the roof decking. I’ve seen this several times over the years, and it’s pretty wild. Mold growth in attics is generally caused by condensation. Warm, moisture-laden air from the living space escapes into a cold attic, and when it cannot adequately escape through proper ventilation, that moisture can condense on the cold surfaces of the roof decking.
