I couldn’t control the events that led to my husband’s incarceration, our divorce, or the mountain of debt he left me with. I couldn’t control that overnight I became a single mother of six because of the decisions he made. But I could control how I responded. I could control my mindset. I could control whether I let bitterness win. I could control my ability to forgive and my ability to move forward. So that’s what I did. I put one foot in front of the other. I kept working, I kept praying, and I kept taking the next step even when I couldn’t see where it was leading. One day I looked back and realized those tiny steps had added up and transformed my life. If you are in a season you never would have picked for yourself, please hear me. You are not defined by this moment. Keep taking small steps, and one day you will look back and be amazed at how far you have come. I wrote The Other Side of Perfect as a roadmap for women rebuilding from nothing. It is for every person who needs a reminder that their life is not over just because it feels that way today.
