5 extremely specific things students with undiagnosed OCD may do: 1️⃣ Reread the same paragraph 10 times because they’re scared they skipped a sentence, misunderstood one word, or didn’t absorb it “correctly” enough to move on. 2️⃣ Check an email to a professor over and over before AND after sending it because they’re terrified they somehow typed a slur, attached a nude photo, or included something horribly inappropriate without realizing it. 3️⃣ Change an answer on an exam, change it back, then stare at it for another five minutes because they can’t get the feeling of certainty that they picked the “right” one. 4️⃣ Avoid raising their hand even when they know the answer because they suddenly imagine themselves blurting out something offensive, sexual, or completely inappropriate instead. 5️⃣ Look up their professor’s attendance policy for the tenth time because they missed one class and can’t stop thinking, “What if I somehow misread it and I’m actually going to fail?” If these sound familiar, you’re not alone. OCD can show up in incredibly specific ways at school, and sometimes the compulsions can look like being extra careful, responsible, or perfectionistic. OCD is highly treatable with specialized therapy.
