6 signs of OCD in adults that often go unnoticed: 1️⃣ Replaying conversations over and over to make sure you didn’t do something wrong: It’s more than thinking about an awkward moment. You mentally review exactly what you said, their facial expression, their tone, and every little detail trying to feel certain you didn’t offend them or say something inappropriate. 2️⃣ Researching WAY past the point where you already have an answer: You’ve read the articles. You’ve checked Reddit. You’ve asked someone you trust. But you keep searching because nothing has made you feel completely certain yet. The researching itself can become a compulsion. 3️⃣ Over-explaining or confessing things so you don’t feel like you’re hiding something: Maybe you give your partner every detail of an interaction or feel like you need to tell someone about a tiny mistake from years ago. Confessing or over-explaining can temporarily relieve the guilt or doubt, until something else feels like it needs to be shared. 4️⃣ Avoiding things because you’re afraid they’ll trigger an intrusive thought: Certain people, places, movies, news stories, or situations start feeling off-limits. Avoiding them can become a compulsion because it gives temporary relief from having the thought or facing the uncertainty around it. 5️⃣ Checking things that have nothing to do with locks or the stove: Checking whether you really love your partner. Scanning your body to see if you feel sick. Rereading a text to make sure it sounds okay. Going through a memory again to make sure you remember it correctly. OCD checking can happen internally too. 6️⃣ Analyzing your thoughts or feelings until you can figure out what they “mean”: An intrusive thought shows up and suddenly you’re checking your reaction, replaying it, testing how you feel, or comparing it to past thoughts. The goal is usually to finally prove what the thought does or doesn’t say about you, but the certainty never seems to last. OCD compulsions aren’t always obvious from the outside. Checking, reassurance seeking, researching, avoidance, confessing, and mental rumination can all become ways of trying to get relief from intrusive thoughts and uncertainty. That temporary relief is often what keeps the OCD cycle going. If you relate, specialized treatment can help.
