How I De-Escalate Public Meltdowns With My Special-Needs Child 1. Redirect their attention. If I catch the escalation early enough, I try to redirect his attention to something familiar, comforting, or interesting before the emotions get even bigger. 2. Remove them from the overstimulating environment. If the environment is too loud, crowded, or overwhelming or I can tell things may become aggressive… I move us somewhere quieter and safer with fewer people and distractions. 3. Remain calm. I try not to match his energy. I lower my voice, keep my words simple like using “first & then statements”, & remind myself that my calm can help him find his calm.
