The inventor of the tetrapod was a true genius who understood nature's raw forces. Ocean waves possess such tremendous power they can destroy roads, buildings, and entire coastlines. When engineers first face this problem, the obvious solution seems simple: build massive concrete walls. However, walls take the full force, absorbing all the water's energy directed straight at them. This creates enormous stress and inevitable failure. In 1950, French engineers discovered a far more elegant solution. Instead of trying to stop the waves, they created enormous concrete blocks with four protruding legs. When waves crash against them, water passes between these blocks, gradually losing its energy and destructive impact. The impact spreads across multiple points rather than concentrating at one point. These tetrapods became a revolutionary approach to coastal protection, adopted worldwide because they work with nature rather than against it. But there is one important caveat: people must be extremely careful around them. There have been numerous cases of people falling into between them and being unable to escape.
