Original caption

Explaining how to use color theory! I use color theory a ton BUT wanted to break it down with acrylic markers in case you weren't sure what it is. Color theory basically is about how colors compliment each other and work color together to create shadows and emotions and blending etc etc. For a color theory lemon you want dimension with, I actually start with PURPLE not yellow. 🍋 #acrylicmarker #colortheory #arttutorial #coloring #lemon

Product placement

Acrylic Markers (ACTS) - Used to draw and color the lemon, creating visible results. Removing them would mean the drawing could not be completed. Arrtx (APPEARS) - A brand name visible on one of the markers. Removing it would not change what happens in the video.

Why do artists use purple when coloring something yellow? This is part of what we call color theory. When you look at the color wheel, purple and yellow are complementary colors. This is because they're across from each other and have high contrast. But it also means that when used together, they can mute the other color to become a darker shade. For this lemon, instead of using black, which can appear flat or overpowering, we can use purple as part of the shadow. On the other hand, yellow's analogous color, orange, could be a more vibrant but darker shade, but it doesn't have the same dimension. You could also use orange, yellow's analogous color, for a vibrant but darker shade, but it doesn't have the same contrast. Now, this applies to all mediums, but with acrylic markers, since they dry fast, you need to layer and blend quickly. You can always go back and easily change if you accidentally color too much darkness or if you want to add more highlights. And although this takes more time because it's more colors and more layers, you can clearly see the difference color theory makes.
