My son and I were driving in the car today, and he was upset because we had left one of the toys he wanted to bring at home. I understood why he was disappointed, so we talked about it and I validated his feelings but the whining continued for the entire car ride. I could feel myself losing patience. I was exhausted and overwhelmed, and part of me wanted to yell, “Please, just stop whining!” But I knew that wouldn’t help either of us. Yelling wouldn’t solve the problem; it would only add my big emotions to his. He wasn’t trying to give me a hard time, he was having a hard time. He needed me to help him work through those feelings and redirect his attention. Toddlers have such big emotions in such little bodies, and they don’t always know what to do with them. Sometimes, we have to meet them where they are, help them feel understood, and guide them back to calm, even when we’re struggling to stay calm ourselves. #toddlersoftiktok #toddler
