Olesya's Kitchen

I found what might be Indiana's only Ukrainian restaurant, Olesya's Kitchen in Columbus. I started with the potato piroshki trio. These golden pan-fried pastries are filled with seasoned mashed potatoes and caramelized onions, then served with three homemade sauces. They were warm, crispy, and such a comforting start to the meal. For my entree, I ordered the main course combo because I wanted to try as much as possible. This plate came loaded with Ukrainian cabbage rolls, Zrazy, vegetable stuffed peppers, cabbage salad, bread rolls, and chicken stroganoff. The cabbage rolls were filled with pork, rice, carrots, then cooked in a creamy sauce. The Zrazy added another hearty, savory bite, while the cabbage salad brought some freshness to the plate. I also love trying everything with their garlic dill cheese sauce. Then, I finished with honey cake, also called Medovik. It was soft, sweet, and beautifully layered. But I love committing food crimes, so naturally I tasted the honey cake with the cabbage and meat dish. Was that combination necessary? Did the sweet and savory flavors kind of work together? Honestly? Olesya's Kitchen was such a cozy introduction to Ukrainian comfort food, and I will definitely come back.
